Honouring Helpers of the Mind, Heart, and Body

On February 21, 2025, we pause to honour the unsung heroes of our healthcare system - mental health nurses. Today marks International Mental Health Nurses' Day, a celebration of dedication, compassion, and resilience in the face of some of humanity's most complex challenges.

Imagine Sarah, a mental health nurse with 15 years of experience. She starts her day with a deep breath, knowing that behind each door she'll open lies a unique story, a struggle, a glimmer of hope. Her patients range from teenagers grappling with anxiety to elderly individuals battling depression. Each interaction requires not just her medical expertise but her empathy, patience, and unwavering support.

Mental health nurses like Sarah are the backbone of psychiatric care. They're often the first to notice subtle changes in a patient's behaviour, the ones who spend hours building trust, and the steady presence during moments of crisis. Their role extends far beyond administering medication; they're educators, advocates, and sometimes, the only support system a patient has.

The Rise of Nurse Psychotherapy

A Holistic Approach to Healing

In recent years, we've seen a growing recognition of nurse psychotherapists—mental health nurses who have advanced their practice to include psychotherapy. This evolution in mental health care brings a unique perspective to the therapeutic relationship.

Consider Mark, a nurse psychotherapist who transitioned from traditional nursing to this specialized role. "As a nurse, I was trained to see the whole person—not just the illness," Mark explains. "This holistic view is invaluable in psychotherapy. We understand how physical health interplays with mental well-being, and we bring a practical, problem-solving approach to therapy."

Nurse psychotherapy differs from traditional psychotherapy in several key ways:

  1. Holistic Care: Nurse psychotherapists integrate physical and mental health care, addressing the mind-body connection more comprehensively.

  2. Practical Approach: Their nursing background equips them with a pragmatic, solution-focused mindset, often leading to more actionable strategies for patients.

  3. Crisis Management: With experience in acute care settings, nurse psychotherapists are particularly adept at handling crises and providing immediate interventions.

  4. Medication Management: Many nurse psychotherapists have extensive knowledge of psychiatric medications and can work closely with prescribing physicians to help manage and monitor medication effects, side effects, and patient adherence, offering a more integrated treatment approach.

The benefits of this approach are profound. Patients often report feeling more understood as their therapist can comprehend both their physical and emotional needs. The practical, goal-oriented nature of nurse psychotherapy can lead to quicker improvements in daily functioning.

Nurse Psychotherapist Spotlight

At Cherry Tree Counselling, we are proud to have two exceptional nurse psychotherapists on our team—Jennifer Joseph and Michelle Stockwell—who exemplify this holistic approach. Both embody the essence of nurse psychotherapy by integrating their nursing backgrounds into their therapeutic practices. They work collaboratively with clients to foster emotional clarity and resilience while addressing both mental and physical health challenges.

Jennifer Joseph

MSN, BSN, CPMHN(C), RN Psychotherapist

Jennifer brings extensive experience in supporting individuals grappling with addiction and various mental health concerns. She approaches each client as a unique individual with their own story and struggles. "I see beyond labels," she says. "I recognize that everyone has their own unique story." This compassionate perspective allows her to connect deeply with her clients and provide tailored support that addresses their specific needs.

Michelle Stockwell

RN, MHSc, CNP/CPN Nurse Psychotherapist

Michelle is dedicated to helping individuals navigate life's complexities with compassion. Her evidence-based, trauma-informed approach empowers clients facing overwhelming situations or life transitions. "With some support and professional guidance," she explains, "many situations that feel overwhelming can become opportunities for better life balance and wellness."

Challenges and Triumphs

Back to Sarah; as she navigates her day, we see the challenges mental health nurses face. She mediates a conflict in the ward, spends an hour coaxing a patient to take their medication, and holds the hand of a grieving family member. It's emotionally taxing work that requires a delicate balance of professional distance and genuine compassion.

Yet for all its challenges, mental health nursing offers moments of profound connection and triumph. Sarah recalls a patient who finally smiled after months of therapy and support. "It's these small victories that keep us going," she says, her eyes bright with emotion.
